Nostalgia

Sight is indivisible from memories. To see something is to simply remind that something from memories. This is why vision is an element of memory. Born in 1956, I shared the memories and experience of my parents and lived through the collective memories of contemporary Korean history in my youth. I peer into my memories using the faded space untethered from time as the medium. The wooden buildings that I may have seen in my childhood, the streets blooming with cherry blossoms, and swallows that may have flown even in my childhood still embroider this spring with embellishments.

본다는 것은 기억과 분리될 수 없다. 무언가를 본다고 말할 때, 본 것은 이미 기억 속의 어떤 것이다. 시각이 기억의 요소로 불리는 이유이다.

1956년생인 나는 부모세대의 경험을 함께 공유함으로부터 시작하여 유년의 시간 속에 한국근현대사의 집단 기억 속에 자리한 개인 기억의 시간 너머의 빛바랜 공간을 매개로 들여다본다. 어릴 때 보았던 목조건물과 거리 위에 능수 벚꽃이 흘러내리고 그 시절에도 날았을 법한 제비는 이 봄에도 벚나무 위를 날고 있다.
